Received 24 April 1997; accepted 12 June 1997.

Abstract

Physical training improves mood. It has been proposed that the mood-enhancing effects of exercise are mediated by endogenous opioids. However, this hypothesis has certain limitations. The author suggests that there is a complex endogenous reward system in the brain that reinforces physical training. This system consists of various neurotransmitter pathways in the brain and the interactions among these pathways. The author further suggests that this endogenous reward system is an important mechanism for mankind's survival.
