In addition, the effect of Se on cognitive development may be mediated by changes of thyroid hormones caused by Se deficiency (Sher, 2001). Sr plays a scavenging role in lipid peroxidation, preventing oxidative damage (Yalin et al., 2012; El-Megharbel et al., 2015).

Also, low selenium intake can reduce cognition and increase anxiety and depression, while selenium supplementation can improve depressive state and mood, and appears to be beneficial for cancer prevention, reducing inflammations and regulate the blood pressure (Benton and Cook, 1991; Sher, 2001, 2002, 2008; Rizvi et al., 2015). Several studies have indicated that organoselenium compounds possess a wide range of biological functions, such as antioxidant, antidepressant, neuroprotective, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antigenotoxic and antimutagenic activities (Machado et al., 2009; Nogueira et al., 2004; Nogueira and Rocha, 2011).
